Serve Day

Honoring Officer Aaron Smith

Marlin Academy's Serve Day honors the life of Trooper Aaron Smith by serving the community as he did, asking for nothing in return. Aaron's life of faith and service makes him a positive role model for young people to emulate as they learn to serve at home, in school, on teams, and in their communities as humble servant leaders.

Indiana State Trooper Aaron Smith embodied what it means to be a servant leader. Whether it was for family, friends, his church, his community, his state, or his county, Aaron's desire was to serve others. He loved helping people and making situations better.

A hometown hero, Aaron grew up in Johnson County, where he graduated from Whiteland Community High School and completed his education at Indiana State University. He served for twelve years with the Indiana National Guard and for five years with the Indiana State Police. He and his wife, Megan, lived in Franklin.

Along with several commendations for achievement in the military, Aaron helped save the life of a fellow soldier who became severely overheated during a long training run on a very hot summer day. He also received two lifesaving awards from the Indiana State Police and was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice.

A humble servant, Aaron never wanted to be in the limelight or applauded for his actions. He often brushed off his acts of service and valor as just part of his job or as something that anyone would do...even if it wasn't. Since his death, his family has learned of several acts of kindness, service, and heroism that he had never shared with them. Aaron served from a desire to make life better for others.

We want to honor Aaron’s life and continue his selfless work. We hope that you’ll join us to do the same.
